The Reconfiguration of Modern Insurance How Modularization Is Reshaping the American Insurance Value Chain TAG Financial Institutions Group has released a new white paper examining the structural transformation of the insurance industry. Titled “The Reconfiguration of Modern Insurance,” the report analyzes how the traditional, vertically integrated insurance model is evolving into a modular, ecosystem-driven insurance value chain. The paper explores the modularization of insurance, including the unbundling of core functions such as underwriting, distribution, capital provision, and infrastructure. It highlights the growing role of Managing General Agents (MGAs), fronting and hybrid carriers, alternative capital providers, and embedded insurance platforms in reshaping how insurance products are designed, distributed, and financed. In addition, the report examines how insurance technology, API-driven platforms, and artificial intelligence in insurance are enabling real-time coordination across participants. These technologies are accelerating the shift toward platform-based insurance models and more flexible, scalable operating structures. This shift reflects a reallocation of value within the insurance industry, rather than new market creation, as premiums move away from traditional carriers toward specialized and interconnected participants. The findings point to a fundamental change in competitive dynamics. As the industry transitions from a balance-sheet-driven model to a more platform-oriented insurance ecosystem, value increasingly accrues to firms that can orchestrate data, capital, and distribution at scale.
